What Is Rolfing Therapy

What Is Rolfing Therapy

Rolfing therapy is a physical therapy that is easy to confuse with massage. This technique focuses on the body's connective tissues, which are also called fascia. Fascia plays an important role in our daily activities. It may lead to negative body effects once it gets injured. Therefore, Rolfing has become one of the popular ways to take care of fascial health.

Let’s follow the exploring steps of ABEGET to have a better understanding of Rolfing.

Theory of Rolfing Therapy

Rolfing Therapy was developed by Ida Pauline Rolf (May 19, 1896 – March 19, 1979), an experienced biochemist. Before we talk about the Rolfing, we need to know our bodies are like precision machines. Fascia is responsible for connecting all the body parts, assisting us in every movement. In Rolf's opinion, gravity on Earth will disrupt the arrangement of fascia within the body, further impacting other parts of the body. Pain, inflammation, or restricted movement are the common symptoms of injured fascia. Therefore, drawing on her research and experience with the body's fascia, Ida Rolf developed Rolfing to help the body better adapt to the Earth's gravitational field and reduce physical ailments.

Rolfing: Targeting Our Fascia

Fascia exists under our skin, which means fascia is ubiquitous in our bodies. Rolfing commonly focuses on major fascial regions, such as shoulders, neck, arms, and thighs.

Rolfers will use their hands, elbows, or forearms to apply pressure in these areas, sometimes incorporating movements of other limbs to adjust the position of the fascia. According to the Dr. Ida Rolf Institute, you may not feel pain but might experience some discomfort during treatment. If you do feel pain, it could be due to either long-term hardening of your soft tissues, making them very sensitive to touch, or it could be psychological reasons such as fear, tension, or past psychological trauma causing you to get this feeling.

Rolfing Treatment Process

A complete Rolfing series consists of 10 sessions.

Session 1-3: Sleeve Sessions

The Sleeve Sessions primarily aim to elongate the body and promote smooth breathing. First of all, relax the fascia around the chest, shoulders, and neck to enhance airflow. Next, adjust the lower legs to improve balance. Finally, pay attention to the lateral fascia, such as the shoulders and pelvic area to improve flexibility.

Session 4-7: Core Sessions

The Core Sessions focus specifically on the core area of the body. These Sessions start from the lower part of the body, from the ankles up to the pelvis. Next, go to the anterior side of the body to enhance flexibility in the lower back. Then, move to the back and strengthen the spine area and surrounding tissues. Finally, make the neck and head supportive.

Session 8-10: Integration Sessions

The final part is going to "summarize" the preceding sessions. Observing the feedback from each adjusted body part, the Rolfers will harmonize either the upper or lower body as a whole during Sessions 8 and 9. The last session will integrate all previous treatments and corrections into the body.

Benefits of Rolfing Therapy

Rolfing helps align our body's energy field with the Earth's gravitational field. After such treatment, it can bring these benefits to our body:

  • Correct your posture
  • Pain relief
  • Enhance the range of motion
  • Improve breathing
  • Better performance

Rolfing and ABEGET

After diving deep into the study of Rolfing, the founders of ABEGET recognized the significance of fascia in the human body. Inspired by this, they decided to develop tools that would make it easier for people to check and care for their bodies. Thus, ABEGET was born.

We aim to combine therapy knowledge with modern technology. To achieve this, we have conducted plentiful research and development on massage guns. For instance, we've designed various massage heads which are suitable for different parts of the body. Addressing individual pain tolerance, we've engineered motors of varying power to offer personalized massage intensities.

If you're interested in Rolfing therapy, let’s try using ABEGET deep tissue massager. Regular massage to your muscles and fascia with appropriate intensity helps them recover to the best status.

We plan to launch more types of massagers in the future, with upgraded intensity and functions. Empowering you to move freely and live fully.
